PSTA's 727 Express Bus Will Link St. Pete to TPA for $2.25

I've driven that cross-bay stretch to TPA more times than I can count — the crawl through Westshore, the garage hunt, the parking tab that somehow costs more than a checked bag. So when PSTA announced last week that it's launching a direct, premium express bus from downtown St. Pete to Tampa International Airport, I actually stopped scrolling and read the whole press release twice.

This is a real deal. Here's what you need to know.

What the 727 Express actually is

PSTA will launch the new 727 Express bus service in October, providing direct daily transportation between downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa International Airport. The route is named after Pinellas County's 727 area code

— a branding choice that's both obvious and kind of perfect.

Service begins October 4, running seven days a week from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m. The line makes nine stops throughout downtown St. Pete, pulling up at SunRunner stations before shooting nonstop to TPA via the Howard Frankland Bridge express lanes. Buses arrive every 75 minutes, and the trip duration will be about 30 minutes, though traffic can change that.

The price point is what really gets me:

just $2.25 per trip.

Parking in TPA's garages for a week-long trip can run $100+. This math isn't complicated.

Each bus will feature luggage storage, free WiFi, and air conditioning to better accommodate passengers traveling to and from the airport.

So yes, you can actually fit a rolling suitcase. That's not a small thing.

Why the old cross-bay bus wasn't cutting it

The 727 Express replaces Route 100, the older line that connected downtown St. Petersburg and downtown Tampa through the Gandy Bridge — but ridership stayed low and it skipped weekends and the airport. PSTA officials predict the 727 will deliver 75% more trips across Tampa Bay than Route 100 did.

The Gandy routing was the killer. It added time, skipped the airport entirely, and left you stranded on a Sunday. The new route fixes all three problems at once.

PSTA CEO Brad Miller said during a joint announcement with airport officials: "For years, one of the questions I have received is, 'How do I get from downtown St. Petersburg to the airport without driving?' Until now, we didn't have a very good answer. Today, we do." The daily service is being touted as a more predictable alternative to driving and parking, particularly during peak tourism periods when the airport's garages frequently reach capacity.

Who built this — and why it matters beyond just transit

The service fits into PSTA's Vision 2030 plan and was built with Tampa International Airport and the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Howard Frankland express lanes — which opened earlier this year — are the key infrastructure piece that makes the 30-minute runtime possible. Without those dedicated lanes, you'd be sitting in the same traffic as everyone else.

Leaders from PSTA and Tampa International Airport said the service marks a significant milestone for travel between Pinellas County and TPA. "For the more than 25 million passengers that we serve each and every year, this route will mean easier access to Pinellas County, to downtown St. Pete, and to our beautiful beaches that we have within this region," Tampa International Airport CEO Michael Stephens said.

That framing matters. TPA is already one of the top-rated airports in the country. Stitching it to downtown St. Pete via a 30-minute express bus puts this city in a different conversation when people are comparing where to relocate.

What this means if you're buying or already own in downtown St. Pete

Transit access has always been one of the friction points for people considering a move to downtown St. Pete. The SunRunner connected beach to city. The 727 connects city to airport. Add a bike and you can genuinely do a lot in this zip code without a car payment.

PSTA says the 727 builds upon the success of the SunRunner by expanding fast, reliable regional connections that support economic growth, tourism, and improved access to major destinations.

That's transit-planner language for: walkable neighborhoods with good transit access tend to hold value well.

If you've been eyeing condos or homes in Old Northeast, the Edge District, or anywhere along the SunRunner corridor, a direct airport bus starting at $2.25 is one more checkbox that makes that lifestyle math easier to run. And for sellers in those corridors, it's a tangible amenity you can now put in the listing notes — not a "coming soon" promise, but an October 4 launch date.
